About
Bruges
 |
Bruges is a splendid medieval town criss-crossed by numerous canals. This "Venice of the North" is now an official UNESCO Heritage site. Bruges got its City charter as early as 1128 when the city started building new walls and canals. Bruges was already an important cloth town at the beginning of the thirteenth century and hanseatic ships filled the harbour. The first merchant fleet from Genoa appeared in the port of Bruges in 1277, providing Bruges with a main link to the Mediterranean. |
